Back from the pause: The Age of AI Tool Overwhelm

A quick note before we jump in — you may have noticed Amplify Weekly went quiet through June. That was intentional. I needed to actually live what I teach for a minute, not just write about it.

If you caught the 7-Day Surprisal Meditation Challenge on the podcast while I was quiet here, I hope it met you exactly where you were. Listen free, if you missed it →

You'll also notice this issue looks a little different. Amplify Weekly just got a shape upgrade — same signal, same pause, new format. Here's what's actually on my mind this week:

From Scattered to Strategic

Seventeen tabs. Three apps mid-notification. A voice memo you recorded in the car that you still haven't listened to, because listening to it means dealing with what's on it.

If that's Friday for you lately, here's the truth I keep coming back to:

  • You don't have a tools problem. You have a nervous system problem wearing a tools costume — no new app fixes a scattered system.
  • 76% of small business owners are already using AI. 73% still say they need real training to use it well. Adoption isn't the gap. Clarity is.
  • The same discernment that notices you're dysregulated is the exact discernment you need to evaluate a chaotic AI tool stack. It's one skill, not two.

I sat in on a workshop recently built entirely around this exact problem — a room full of business owners, all nodding at the same slide. The theme, stated plainly by the presenter: from scattered to strategic and intentional. Not "add more tools." Not "learn every feature." Just — notice the scatter, then choose on purpose.

You could delete every app on your phone tonight and still wake up scattered by Monday — because the scattering was never really about the apps in the first place. It's what an overwhelmed nervous system does when it's asked to hold too much at once: it stops prioritizing and starts grabbing at whatever's loudest.

I'm not going to pretend the fix fits in a newsletter section. It doesn't. But the shift starts smaller than you'd think, and it starts with a question most people skip: not "which tool," but "what state am I actually in when I'm choosing." Sit with that one before you open a single new app.

More on that — the actual how — is up on the blog now.
