The Listening Signal
What happens to human creativity when AI can make the music?
AI can now generate music in seconds.
A melody can appear before someone has learned an instrument. A rough idea can become a finished song almost instantly.
For many musicians, that possibility raises a very real fear:
If technology can make the music, what happens to the musician?
This week, I’m joined by musician, educator, producer, and Music Mindfulness founder Josh Brill, whose relationship with music offers another way into that question.
Josh has spent nearly four decades playing and teaching music. But he doesn’t describe himself as someone for whom music came naturally.
Instead, the struggle became part of the path.
Over time, meditation, teaching, and embodied practice helped him experience music as more than something we produce or perform.
Music became a practice of listening.
Of experiencing sound not only through the thinking mind, but through what Josh describes as three instruments: the head, the heart, and the body.
And that becomes especially interesting when we bring AI into the conversation.
Josh describes himself as something of an anomaly among musicians when it comes to AI.
He understands the fear surrounding AI-generated music. But he’s also curious about whether these tools could become an on-ramp into creativity — giving someone who may not have years of technical training a way to begin expressing a musical idea.
It’s not a question of whether mastery still matters.
It’s an invitation to think more deeply about where creativity actually begins.
Because before we ask AI to amplify our creativity, perhaps we first need to learn how to recognize what is genuinely ours to express.
✨ Inside This Episode
• How music moves beyond the thinking mind into the head, heart, and body
• Why embodied listening can help us recognize what is genuinely ours to express
• Why Josh sees AI-generated music as a creative on-ramp — not simply a threat to musicians
🧭 A Question to Sit With
As you listen, consider this:
Before asking AI to amplify your creativity, how well have you learned to recognize what is genuinely yours to express?
✨ Spotlight: Meet Paul Culshaw
In August, we explore authentic amplification in the age of AI, and what it means to stay genuinely recognisable as yourself when the tools are this powerful.
Paul Culshaw is a Strategic Advisor and Mentor known for helping founders become recognised experts online and in AI.
Paul brings the Legibility Gap lens: the gap between being genuinely skilled and being clearly recognised for that expertise.
His work connects positioning, authority signals and AI visibility, shaping how founders build a body of knowledge that reflects what they know, who they help and why they are the right choice.
Paul also hosts free online Roundtable Sessions for founders who want to become known, chosen and scaled, with replay access available when you register.
What happens when your expertise is real, but the signals around it are too unclear for people or AI to recognise?
